Driver's Licence

In order to drive a car or motorcycle in Switzerland, you are required to have a licence. Foreign licences must be converted after moving to Switzerland.

Foreign Licence

People moving to Switzerland who are in possession of a diver's licence (Führerausweis) must have it converted to a Swiss driver's licence within 12 months. In order to do so, a request must be submitted to the Basel-Landschaft vehicle inspection department (Motorfahrzeugkontrolle). Depending on the country of origin, different rules may apply. A driving test or theory exam may be necessary. The Basel-Landschaft vehicle inspection department provides further information.

Driving Exam

An exam is required in order to obtain a driver's licence in Switzerland. The exam includes theory and practice. You must be at least 17 years old to take the exam. The theory exam may be written in German, French, or Italian in Canton Basel-Landschaft. Information regarding requirements and procedures is provided by the vehicle inspection department. Operating trucks, buses, and taxis requires special exams.
